Some trends are trickier than others, but few combinations are as initially difficult as that of the skirt worn over pants. On the catwalk, the idea can seem appealing, but in real life a skirt plus pants channels images of middle school fashion experiments gone wrong or deliberately kooky blogger bait. While there are countless ways the skirt plus pants can look questionable, in the hands of an expert the look can be utter perfection. Rising Chinese model Du Juan has never played it safe with her wardrobe choices, and at Chanel’s Beijing-located re-staging of its Métiers d’Art Paris in Rome show, the beauty took a look straight from the label’s Spring 2016 collection and upgraded it by stripping it down to the essentials.
Opting for no jewelry, simple sandals, and a coordinating pair of pants instead of the clashing print knit leggings shown on the runway, Juan brought out the breezy beauty of Karl Lagerfeld’s design. The saturated red, white, and blue color scheme; the kaleidoscopic take on plaid; and the unique neckline all came to the forefront—so much so that you might not even notice that Du’s wearing pants beneath all those layers of tulle. It all added up to subtle styling that pulled off the ultimate trick: of making one of the hardest trends around seem effortless.
No doubt you have your own images and ideas when we mention the long over long trend for Spring/Summer, but it has so many variations and possibilities that it’s worth a moment’s reflection, we feel.
