What is MRP Passport & e-Passport?
MRP passport in Bangladesh refers to the Machine-Readable Passport, an official travel document issued by the Government of Bangladesh. It is equipped with machine-encoded text that contains the holder’s personal information, such as the applicant’s name, date of birth, and passport number, encoded in a format that can be easily scanned and processed by passport control systems at airports and other immigration checkpoints.
The renewal or reissue process can be easily converted to an e-passport for those with an MRP passport. However, as the government no longer renews MRPs, it is highly recommended to switch to e-passports for faster and easier travel.
e-Passport in Bangladesh refers to the Electronic Passport, also known as a biometric passport or a digital passport. It is a technologically advanced passport which is Globally accepted by Immigration (Embassys) Bodies and Airports authorities.
The e-Passport incorporates a microchip embedded in the passport cover, which securely stores the passport holder’s biometric information, including their facial image, fingerprints, and personal details. Introduced in 2020, e-passports are now widely available, with all regional passport offices in Bangladesh offering this service.
This electronic data can be read and verified by automated systems at immigration checkpoints, enhancing the accuracy and security of identity verification processes. The ePassport in Bangladesh aims to provide a global travelling database, travellers’ track records, increased convenience, enhanced security, and improved efficiency for Bangladeshi citizens travelling internationally.

A passport in Bangladesh is valid for 10 years for those aged 18 to 65 years and 5 years for those aged under 18 or aged over 65 years. For adults (18 years and above), the regular passport is valid for 5 years from the issue date. For minors (below 18 years), the passport is valid for 5 years regardless of age.
It’s important to note that the expiration date of a passport is the last day of its validity, beyond which it cannot be used for travel.
It is recommended to renew the passport well before expiration to avoid any inconvenience or travel restrictions.
