Daraz Unveils New Brand Look Moving Into Next Phase of Growth!

Daraz, South Asia’s leading e-commerce platform, unveiled its new brand look today – building on a successful 2021 of significant progress for the company.

Bjarke Mikkelsen, Founder and CEO of Daraz Group said the launch marks an exciting step forward for the business.
“Daraz has grown so much over the past seven years and as we move into the next chapter of our journey, now is the right time for us to evolve the brand to showcase how we are shifting gears as a business to drive a significantly enhanced customer experience.

“The new brand look still represents the elements that have always been part of our DNA – progress, innovation, exploration, and discovery. At the same time, it signifies a shift to a more personal experience that will allow us to create greater connectivity between buyers and sellers on our platform,” said Mr Mikkelsen.

One of the main drivers to refresh the brand is Daraz’s ambition to make e-commerce a key part of people’s daily lives across its five markets in South Asia – Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Myanmar.

“We recognize that to achieve this ambition we need to create more personal experiences, ensure that we deliver quality products and services at each step of the customer journey, and create new avenues of entertainment and engagement for our customers. This brand refresh will play a key role in helping us elevate and evolve our offering across these crucial areas,” added Mr Mikkelsen.

A key change is the new icon, which represents a package that is symbolic of how the e-commerce platform physically connects SME sellers to customers. At the center of the icon is an arrow that highlights the focus on progress and fast deliveries, but also resembles a “play button” symbolizing how Daraz is continually innovating to create a more dynamic content experience for users.

Syed Mostahidal Hoq, Managing Director of Daraz Bangladesh Limited (daraz.com.bd) said, “New Daraz comes with the promise of a shopping experience that is unlike ever before. Welcome to a new era of E-commerce where Daraz is an exciting new part of your daily life.”

As part of the new brand look, Daraz is also consolidating all of its brands under the overall Daraz umbrella-brand to simplify the experience for customers. Daraz has also launched a new website, Daraz.com, that showcases the new brand and gives people a better understanding of who Daraz is and what it stands for.

Safer Online Shopping Measures at a Time of Social Distancing

Over the past few days, the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in Bangladesh has become apparent. The government is rushing to curb the spread of the virus and contain the economic fallout from the pandemic, businesses are struggling with the uncertainty and investors’ anxiety has wreaked havoc at the Bangladesh Stock Exchange. Families have disconnected from their daily lives to practice social distancing in keeping with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation for the pandemic.

But where do e-commerce platforms stand?

Globally, countries have witnessed reduced visits to offline retail stores with consumers only venturing out if absolutely necessary. In countries like France, Italy or Spain, where strict quarantine has been enforced, locals are not able to leave their houses without official certificates and are turning toward e-commerce to meet their basic needs. In Bangladesh, similar consumer behaviors toward online shopping have been observed for the past few days.

Daraz, the leading online marketplace in Bangladesh, is doing everything to ensure that customers have safe access to basic commodities such as flour, lentils, soaps, sanitizers, sugar, tea, surface cleaners, hand washes and baby formula. The platform is also taking measures to ensure minimal instances of price hikes and has promised to take immediate and strict actions to prevent marketplace sellers from taking unfair advantage of the situation alongside making sure all sellers are provided with support to keep their businesses running during this time of crisis.

Ensuring the health and well-being of its entire community – delivery agents, customers, sellers and users around Bangladesh – is the platform’s prime concern. All employees and delivery agents adhere to the strict protective measures recommended by the World Health Organization. Working from home has become the norm for most employees. At Daraz’ warehouses, hubs and offices, colleagues have been told to refrain from physical contact. The protocol is simple: maintain as much distance as possible from each other at all times and wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Furthermore, the temperature of all employees at the warehouse and all members of the logistics team is checked several times daily.

“It is our primary responsibility right now to ensure that our employees, delivery agents and customers remain safe. We anticipate an uptick in demand and have taken steps to ensure that we are equipped to serve the needs of our customers. At the same time, it is our social responsibility to help prevent the spread of the virus and therefore, the strictest standards of hygiene are being enforced at our facilities,” said Khondokar Tashfin Alam, COO Daraz Bangladesh.

DEX Heros – delivery agents – have been instructed to wear masks and gloves at all times. While there has been no scientific evidence that packages carry the virus according to the World Health Organization, DEX Heros have been instructed to take precautionary measures and disinfect the package at customer’s doorstep.

While the WHO has stated that there is no evidence that banknotes transmit the virus, Daraz is encouraging all customers to use digital payment options – such as bank cards and e-wallets – when shopping on the platform. With cashless transactions, Users are encouraged to make contactless reception of their orders where riders can put the parcel on the doorstep and the buyer picks it up at a distance.

As the country moves toward social distancing, e-commerce platforms have the responsibility of ensuring the safety of their customers, their logistics teams and their operations team. Strict precautions are the need of the hour to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Daraz Acquires Food Delivery Start-up HungryNaki

Country’s largest e-commerce site Daraz, a concern of Alibaba Group, is going to add another feather to its cap by acquiring the food delivery service company HungryNaki. Both the concerns came up with this development in a joint press conference arranged by them at BICC on March 4, 2021.

Daraz’s Managing Director Syed Mostahidal Hoq, HungryNaki CEO and Co-founder AD Ahmad and other high officials from both the companies were present at the press conference.

daraz acquires hungrynaki

According to information provided at the press conference, Daraz has taken over all the tangible and intangible assets of Hungrynaki. However, HungryNaki will keep functioning as usual with all the existing employees and will operate as a separate brand with an independent food delivery platform owned by Daraz directly.

Daraz’s Managing Director Syed Mostahidal Hoq said on occasion, “We aspire to be a one stop solution for all our customers’ needs. And getting into the food delivery business is a natural move. HungryNaki is the pioneer in the food delivery business in Bangladesh with a loyal customer base. We believe instead of building our own food delivery business from the ground up, acquiring HungryNaki is ideal considering these two factors. We believe, by investing in the infrastructure, technology and human resources, we can take HungryNaki into a new height.”

Daraz Acquires Food Delivery Start-up HungryNaki

HungryNaki CEO and Co-founder AD Ahmad shared, “We can definitely say that this is an auspicious moment for all of us because this acquisition by Daraz proves that our e-commerce industry is in an optimistic state. Moreover, this is a positive sign for other local start-ups, and this kind of acquisition will play a full part in the revival of our economy by expediting positive impacts. We will be working with Daraz to make Hugnrynaki a formidable player in the market.”

Founded in 2013, HungryNaki is an app-based food delivery service company. With a network span of a large number of restaurants, cloud kitchen, home kitchen and service extended 5 cities in Bangladesh, HungryNaki offers on-demand delivery to cross-sections of people. At the moment, the company is serving more than 500,000 customers across Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Cox’s Bazar and Narayanganj.

On the other hand, Daraz is the leading online marketplace in South Asia, empowering tens of thousands of sellers to connect with millions of customers. Daraz provides immediate and easy access to 10 million products in more than 100+ categories and delivers more than 2 million packages every month to all corners of its countries.

This acquisition is expected to accrue operational efficiency of HungryNaki owing to the fact that the expertise and experience gathered in customer service and management over the years by Alibaba Group and Daraz will definitely play pivotal roles in this regard.
